I became interested in motivating employees using coaching skills when I joined Toastmasters. I noticed that the members were able to give each other constructive feedback that resulted in increased motivation and greater skill. What's the secret to giving feedback like that? Toastmasters use the same skills developed by professional coaches to encourage positive change and growth. They have a sincere desire to help each other improve, they listen closely, and they remember to note the positive as well as areas needing improvement. This creates an environment where it is safe to stretch past your current skills and grow to your full potential.
A professional coach has been trained in the use of coaching models to ensure that clients identify and address all facets of an issue. These models are intended to help the client identify the issues they face, become aware of where they are now, form a vision for their future, and strategize to achieve that vision. The client is responsible for setting the goals, determining what action steps are appropriate, and taking the steps. The coach supports the client and holds them accountable.
How does this translate to the employment relationship? Let's say an employee is struggling to accurately perform a required task. You can help the employee solve this problem by asking questions to identify the issue. Yes, I know job performance is the issue. But let's find out what the employee has to say. Appropriate questions might be: Do you understand how the task is to be done? Have you had enough training? Are there simple adjustments to your work station that would make the job easier or more comfortable? Help your employees build accountability by allowing them to examine their behavior and come up with the answers. Resist the urge to jump in and tell them what the problem is. Work with the employee to set up an improvement plan and hold them accountable for following through. By involving them in the planning process, you increase the chances that they will successfully complete the plan.
